Grand Bend Vegan and Vegetarian Restaurant Guide

Grand Bend Vegan and Vegetarian Restaurant Guide

There are so many vegan options in the beach town of Grand Bend.

Grand Bend, Ontario. Home to some of Ontario’s cleanest and bluest waters, one of the top sunsets in the world, and…a vegan travel destination? Well, there aren’t any entirely Grand Bend vegan restaurants yet, but it’s a surprisingly vegan-friendly place. Gone are the days of surviving off French fries at the beach (unless that’s your jam, of course). I had the opportunity to try several vegan meals at restaurants in Grand Bend during my stay. Here’s where you can find plant-based dining in Grand Bend.

HIGHWAY GIRL

Right from the start, I knew that Highway Girl was a fantastic choice for vegans as I could see a sign right in the window for vegan options! There’s also a quote by Hippocrates, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” Highway Girl has healthy options for just about any diet or allergy, including gluten-free, vegan, and raw food. The owner was inspired to start a cafe with something for everyone because her family members have various food allergies and dietary restrictions.

You’ll find all sorts of goodies here, including a coffee shop with specialty beverages. There are desserts made in house, such as vegan donuts, and an entire section devoted to raw and vegan treats. Many sandwiches can be made vegan using “Nuts for Cheese” cashew cheese in place of dairy cheese. Another half of the shop is devoted to local wares and gifts, with everything from pottery to jewelry. While I’d love to return for lunch, the mini vegan chocolate cheesecake I bought tasted heavenly.

MIDORI SUSHI

I didn’t expect to find such a delicious and authentic sushi restaurant on the main strip of Grand Bend. Midori Sushi serves high quality and tasty Japanese cuisine, and the vegan options on the menu are clearly marked. There’s also gluten-free dishes, too. It was difficult to choose what to order because everything sounded so good. I decided on the miso soup and edamame to start, and I ordered cucumber rolls and sweet potato rolls as my main dish. The edamame was served with garlic and a lime wedge, an innovative choice and it quickly became my favourite edamame dish to date.

The restaurant itself has a huge outdoor patio – perfect for those hot, summer days. There are motivational messages in the form of a rock garden by the trees. How can you not enjoy your sushi with colourful rocks reading “be happy!”, “gratitude”, and “smile”? Up by the building, there’s an adorable set of swings to sway as you sip your drink at the bar. Speaking of drinks, I highly recommend the frozen margarita!

SMACKWATER JACK’S

Want to visit a restaurant with sunset views? Smackwater Jack’s Taphouse is right on the harbour overlooking Lake Huron and the beach. Snag a spot at their patio for one of the most scenic dining views in town. Did you know that Smackwater Jack’s even offers a shuttle service if you’re staying at a nearby hotel? It’s true! We got picked up at our hotel by a lovely female employee, and she drove us back once we were finished eating (and admiring the sunset!). If you’re enjoying a few drinks, take advantage of this service and no one will have to be the designated driver.

There’s one vegan option on the regular menu: the Baked Veggie Wrap. I thoroughly enjoyed this vegetarian and plant-based option. It’s a house-made tortilla wrap filled with rice, black beans, tomatoes, corn, spinach, and roasted red pepper hummus. Yum! I also snacked on some tortilla chips and salsa to start, paired with a Fuzzy Peach drink (topped with a fuzzy peach candy).

BARREL BISTRO

Barrel Bistro is located in the basement of Dark Horse Estate Winery, right next to the barrel room. While there aren’t any vegan brunch offerings on the menu, the owners and chefs at Barrel Bistro are committed to creating tasty meals for everyone. The staff assured me that it was no problem, the chef would prepare a surprise vegan meal for me. When the food arrived to the table, I couldn’t believe my eyes. I was presented with the most beautiful vegan crepe, filled with fresh berries simmered in ice wine, and topped with cashew Chantilly cream. It was a very special and memorable meal, and I savoured every bite. Just let the staff know that you’re vegan and they’ll take care of you!

OAKWOOD RESORT

Here’s a bonus one if you spend the night at Oakwood Resort in Grand Bend. There’s a breakfast buffet with some of the best vegan options I’ve seen at a hotel buffet. There are some typical findings, like bread and peanut butter/jam, fruit, and potatoes. However, there’s also a berry cobbler with a “vegan” sign right in front of it. Furthermore, the chef whipped up a tofu scramble just for me, and it was super yummy. Be sure to request the tofu scramble as it won’t be out in the buffet, but the chef can make it for you – no problem! This Grand Bend vegan guide wouldn’t be complete without something for every meal of the day, so get over to Oakwood Resort and wake up to a yummy plant-based meal.

As you can see, Grand Bend has tons of vegan options beyond the typical French fry stand. Even though there aren’t any specific Grand Bend vegan restaurants, there are a ton of veggie selections at establishments around town. I am sure there are even more vegan options to discover, so I’ll have to search for even more the next time I’m in town. There’s only so much food a girl can eat in a couple of days!
