Best Vegan Restaurants in Perth, Ontario

The town of Perth is known for its amazing culinary scene, so I was pleased to discover that there’s lots of vegan food in Perth, too. There are so many wonderful things to do in Perth, and I happily spent a few days visiting this beautiful small town in Ontario. While the best vegan restaurants in Perth, Ontario aren’t 100% vegan establishments, there are delicious plant-based offerings on their menus.

There are many restaurants featuring various varieties of cuisine, as well as sweets and treats at doughnut shops, chocolatiers, and gelato shops. Without further ado, here are my favourite vegan-friendly restaurants in Perth.

Vegan in Perth Ontario: Michael’s Table

Michael’s Table is a family owned and operated restaurant in Perth since 2010, run by a mother-daughter duo. They boast their inviting environment in all seasons with indoor dining all year long and a large patio on Gore Street. Michael’s Table specializes in North American classics, homestyle cooking, and homemade desserts. Everything is prepared from scratch.

There are quite a few vegetarian selections on the menu, many that are vegetarian that can be prepared vegan, and one vegan dish. I ordered the vegan dish, the Thai Buddha Bowl. I loved the rainbow of colours on my plate. There are lots of veggies on a bed of rice, drenched in a red curry peanut sauce.

Some other dishes that you can order are the Mediterranean Penne (remove the feta), the Grilled Veggie Wrap (remove the goat cheese and mayo), and the House Salad (remove the cheese). From my experiences, the fragrant Thai Buddha Bowl demonstrates that this is one of the best vegan restaurants in Perth, Ontario.

Vegan Restaurants in Perth: The Fieldhouse

Vegan Restaurants in Perth: The Fieldhouse

The Fieldhouse is an adorable cafe in Perth serving up caffeinated beverages and light eats for lunch. There is a limited amount of indoor and outdoor seating, so you may choose to opt for a grab and go option. Stewart Park is right across the road from The Fieldhouse, so I ate my lunch at a picnic table in the park.

For lunch, you will find sandwiches, salads and bowls on the menu. In the summer, The Fieldhouse also offers wine and craft beer if you’re dining on their patio. I tried the tofu noodle bowl with peanut dressing, and it was the perfect picnic lunch. There’s also a house greens salad, and a veggie sandwich (although you’ll need to enquire as to whether or not it can be made vegan).

Maximillian Restaurant

Maximillian Restaurant - Vegan restaurants in Perth Ontario

Maximilian Restaurant is locally owned and operated since 1973, and it’s a beloved establishment in Perth. This is one of the best vegan restaurants in Perth. They serve many vegan-friendly dishes that mimic authentic European cuisine. Maximilian Restaurant is well known for their famous schnitzel. While there isn’t a vegan schnitzel on the menu, the chef informed me that they’re working on coming up with a recipe for one. Fingers crossed that it works out!

Maximilian Restaurant goes above and beyond for vegetarians and vegans. There are vegan sausages, pretzels, sauerkraut and buttery potatoes. Your meal starts with bread and a little salad. It’s no problem to ask for vegan butter. The pretzels are vegan and come with mustard. And then the sausages, sauerkraut and buttery potatoes were absolutely divine. It was such a treat to dine there and really transported me back to my holidays in Germany.

Penny’s Place Diner

Penny's Place Diner

Penny’s Place Diner is a bustling and lively breakfast and lunch restaurant in Perth. It always seems to be packed, even on a weekday morning for breakfast, but it’s well worth the wait for a table. This charming little diner features fresh cuisine made from scratch. While it’s not advertised as a vegan-friendly restaurant in Perth and nothing on the menu is marked as such, it’s very easy to transform the vegetarian dishes into vegan ones.

Penny's Place Diner

There are currently two meals that can be prepared vegan: the avocado toast and the breakfast scramble bowl. For the avocado toast, ask to remove the salmon and the egg. They added more fresh veggies on top and it was a great way to start the day. For the breakfast scramble bowl, ask for no eggs and no cheese. They’ll whip up a tasty concoction of potatoes, veggies, and spicy black beans.

Please note that Penny’s Place unfortunately doesn’t have any plant-based milk for their coffee, though I’d love to see them carry some almond or oat milk for the growing population that chooses not to consume dairy.

Picnic Cafe + Catering

Picnic Cafe + Catering

Picnic Cafe is proud of their excellent coffee, fresh food and friendly service. They have a spacious restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating, so you won’t have any issues finding a seat. As the name suggests, Picnic Cafe + Catering has a restaurant and a catering side to their business. They’ll happily help cater for your small events, private parties, and celebrations. It’s perfect if you’re looking to cater an event for anyone with special dietary needs.

On the menu, there’s soup, salad, sandwiches, bowls, and baked goods. Many of the dishes are vegan or gluten-free, and they are clearly marked as such. For baked goods, the vegan options are the breakfast cookie and energy balls. Now, let’s talk about meals at Picnic, one of the best vegan restaurants in Perth.

There’s a Sushi Bowl that can be made vegan (simply ask for it vegan instead of regular). The Mezze Bowl (which I ordered) can also be made vegan. It has falafel, hummus, baba ganoush, tabouleh, Middle Eastern pickles, tahini and fresh veggies. So good! The Freekeh salad is vegan, too. Picnic Cafe also has a wide variety of coffee and tea drinks, as well as artisan kombucha. I ordered an iced tea that was so beautiful to look at – the most vibrant shade of purple!

Vegan Restaurants in Perth: Gather

Vegan Restaurants in Perth: Gather

Gather serves “modern wholesome comfort food” where everything is freshly made in house from scratch. While you’re welcome to dine inside their restaurant, they are also happy to arrange picnics for you, too (so cool!). The restaurant has a comforting and welcoming environment, and I truly enjoyed dining there.

There are a few vegan items on the menu, although I really enjoyed this vegetarian-made-vegan dish. This is the Buffalo tofu sandwich, perfectly spiced and also had a fun element of crispiness from the potato chips. There’s also a vegan chickpea omelet offered at Gather, too. It’s one of my favourite vegan restaurants in Perth, hands down.

North Folk Cafe

North Folk Cafe

North Folk Cafe is a boutique cafe and market with kombucha on tap, espresso beverages, handcrafted pastries and gelato. I didn’t get the chance to dine here during my visit to Perth, but I did really enjoy my iced Americano with oat milk.

North Folk Cafe

North Folk Cafe has a seasonally inspired menu with vegan options like avocado toast and carrot ginger soup. They have several varieties of vegan gelato, like chocolate mint, mojito, pear and raspberry. You may also find some plant-based baked goods, too.

Vegan Donuts at Blackfly Grub Hub

BlackFly GrubHub Donuts is a donut shop located inside the historic Code’s Mill building in Perth. They proudly offer vegan donuts on Friday and Saturday only, though you may be able to pre-order them anytime by special order (minimum of six).

I tried their vanilla glaze and coffee cream donuts and both were super delicious. On the website, they also showcase cinnamon sugar vegan donuts, too. You may be able to wait until a Friday or Saturday to pick up some vegan donuts, but pre-ordering isn’t such a bad idea!

Vegan Chocolates at Perth Chocolate Works

Vegan Chocolates at Perth Chocolate Works

Perth Chocolate Works is a chocolate shop inside the Code’s Mill building, across the way from the donut shop. While this chocolate shop doesn’t advertise any vegan chocolates, there are a few dark chocolates that are vegan. Some of their packaged chocolates have an ingredient list, so it’s easy to determine which ones are plant-based (the mint meltaways are vegan, for instance). They also have a full shelf of Biscoff cookies and cookie butter, which are accidentally vegan!

Stella Luna Gelato Cafe

Vegan Gelato at Stella Luna Gelato Cafe

Stella Luna Gelato Cafe is a cute gelateria and coffee shop in downtown Perth. There are always several flavours of gelato featured in their display case, and the vegan ones are clearly marked. When I visited, there were two vegan gelatos: raspberry blackberry and strawberry kiwi. I opted to try both flavours and both were really yummy (though I think I enjoyed the strawberry kiwi one a little bit more!).
