Here are the best veg-friendly and vegan restaurants in Belleville, Ontario. I spent three days in Belleville and discovered all of the best places to find vegetarian and vegan food. While there aren’t any entirely vegan restaurants in Belleville, I took it upon myself to find all of the best veg options at fantastic restaurants in the city.
I’ve done all of the research and taste testing, so I can recommend these top vegan spots in Belleville based on my own personal experiences. These top restaurants in Belleville represent a variety of international cuisines, like Japanese food, Caribbean food, Mediterranean eats, and so much more.

Vegan Restaurants in Belleville: Toro Sushi
Toro Sushi is a long standing Japanese and Korean restaurant in Belleville since 2003. It’s a locally owned and operated restaurant in the heart of downtown Belleville. Toro Sushi offers takeout and indoor dining at their restaurant. They don’t accept reservations, so dining at the restaurant is offered on a first come, first serve basis.
Many sushi restaurants are vegetarian and vegan-friendly, and Toro Sushi is no exception. I selected the agedashi tofu as my appetizer, a seaweed salad, and three kinds of sushi: kappa maki (cucumber), oshinko maki (pickled radish) and inari sushi (tofu pocket with rice). There are several other kinds of veggie rolls, stir fry noodle dishes with vegetables, and vegetable gyoza. Please note that the miso soup is not vegan.
Vegan Restaurants in Belleville: Royal Haveli
Royal Haveli serves fine Indian cuisine in Belleville and there’s no shortage of vegetarian and vegan options. The restaurant describes its food as authentic North Indian style cooking. This is one of my favourite vegan restaurants in Belleville as the food is really tasty and there’s loads of vegan food on the menu.
Take a look under the vegetarian section of the menu, and inquire to make sure that nothing is cooked with ghee or paneer. I ordered chana masala, and there’s also spinach potato, dal tadka (lentils), and bhindi masala (okra). I also got an order of veggie samosa and onion bhaji.
Please note that dining in the restaurant is only open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Otherwise, you will need to do takeout (I didn’t realize this when I visited the restaurant on a Thursday, but I brought the food back to my hotel room). Royal Haveli also has a booth at Pop-Ups on the Bay with a limited menu, though I did see some vegetarian/vegan options like chana masala.
Vegan Belleville: Birdy’s Fine Casual Dining
Birdy’s Fine Casual Dining is a family restaurant in Belleville, and it has quite a few vegan offerings for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It’s one of the best vegan restaurants in Belleville, especially for breakfast. I highly recommend ordering their “Vegan Breakfast”, pictured above. You get vegan sausage, cinnamon toast with margarine, fresh fruit, and home fries.
For lunch and dinner, there is a section of the menu titled “pasta and vegan”. There is a vegan Mediterranean linguine, a vegan grilled vegetable sandwich, and a vegan Beyond Meat burger. Even though Birdy’s isn’t a 100% plant-based restaurant, there are enough vegan dishes on the menu to return on multiple occasions, ordering something new each time.
Vegan Belleville: Quinte Corner Cafe
Quinte Corner Cafe is an amazing breakfast and lunch cafe and coffee shop in downtown Belleville. They are really awesome at labelling their dishes as vegan, vegetarian, or paleo. I stopped by for breakfast and chose the avocado toast with an iced Americano (with oat milk). There’s also a vegan breakfast wrap on the breakfast menu.
For lunch, there is a vegan grilled veggie sandwich, smashed chickpea wrap, vegan bruschetta grilled cheese, and garden salad. There are also many fruit smoothies, too. Quinte Corner Cafe offers a fantastic selection of packaged Sweets from the Earth desserts and baked goods, which are all 100% vegan.
Vegan Belleville: Caribbean Kitchen
Caribbean Kitchen is where you’ll find delicious, authentic West Indies food in Belleville. Don’t miss ordering at least one of their Doubles, which come with a mouthwatering chickpea mixture topped with a homemade tamarind sauce. I couldn’t resist getting one of their chickpea rotis as my main dish. Caribbean Kitchen is a takeout spot only, and it’s the place to go in Belleville for tasty Caribbean eats.
Vegan Dining in Belleville: Little Italy on 62
Little Italy on 62 is a really unassuming spot that I feel must be a local’s best kept secret. It’s nestled beside a gas station on the outskirts of town. Believe me, you need to dine at Little Italy on 62 if you love authentic Italian pizza. Everything is homemade, right down to the breadcrumbs.
There are two vegan pizzas on the menu, one called “La Vegan” with veggies and a marinara pizza. I chose the marinara pizza because I ate those all over Italy and I wanted to see how it compared. If I didn’t know I was in Belleville, I would have thought I was in Italy. I also tried a slice of bruschetta bread, which I can confidently say was the best tasting bruschetta I’ve ever had. This is not only one of the best vegan restaurants in Belleville, it is one of the best restaurants in Belleville, period!
Vegan Restaurants at Belleville’s Pop-Ups on the Bay
Located at West Zwick’s Park, Pop-Ups on the Bay is a waterfront pop-up village featuring food and drink vendors operating out of brightly painted shipping containers. There are also food trucks on-site. Many of the vendors offer vegan fare, but a few of them don’t. Here are the best spots for veggie eats at Pop-Ups on the Bay.
Falafel Royale
Falafel Royale is a really vegetarian-friendly Mediterranean food stand at Pop-Ups on the Bay. I couldn’t resist ordering one of their falafel wraps and I’m really glad that I did. It’s naturally 100% vegan with tahini, hummus, and a variety of veggie toppings. Paired with a lemonade from the Lemons stand, and you’ve got yourself the perfect plant-based picnic.
Tropical Blends Cafe
Tropical Blends has a brick and mortar location in downtown Belleville, but it was closed over a few weeks in August. The company was operating solely from the shipping container at Pop-Ups on the Bay with a reduced menu. There are several smoothies on the menu that can be made vegan/dairy-free. Pictured is “The Blue Crush One” with honeydew melon, banana, and butterfly pea flower.
Benji’s Cafe
I stopped by Benji’s Cafe after I went kayaking at Pop-Ups on the Bay to get a coffee. They have a variety of plant-based milks, including oat milk (my personal fav). I also noticed that Benji’s has vegan cinnamon buns. While I wasn’t hungry enough to buy one, I hope you get the chance to try them (and let me know what you think when you do!).
Vegan-Friendly Bakeries and Coffee Shops
Belleville also has several bakeries and coffee shops with vegan fare, whether it’s food or drink. I’ve highlighted the best spots to go for coffee in Belleville, as well as some sweet treats.
Sugar Mama’s Bake Shoppe
Sugar Mama’s Bake Shoppe is a bakery with tempting sweets and treats in Belleville, primarily serving cupcakes. There aren’t any vegan cupcakes on display, but they keep two vegan and gluten-free cupcakes in the back (vanilla and chocolate). They are in the freezer so they come out a bit frozen. Either wait for them to thaw or eat semi-frozen like I did!
Small Scale Bread
You’ve gotta stop by Small Scale Bread when you visit Belleville! They create small batch, organic, sourdough bread in the heart of Belleville. There are loaves of sourdough offered daily, as well as daily specials.
It’s also a fantastic coffee shop and you can pair a coffee with one of their baked goods, too. Unfortunately, their vegan blondie was sold out when I visited, though I would have loved to have tried it. I’ll have to return sometime soon!
The Break Room
The Break Room is one of the best coffee shops in Belleville. It’s a coffee shop combined with a bike shop, self-described as a “hub for community, coffee, and cycle culture”. Stop by for a caffeinated beverage and a treat. I read online that they have vegan desserts on occasion, but there weren’t any available when I visited.
Gourmet Diem
Gourmet Diem is a cozy coffee shop in Belleville with a calming indoor atmosphere and an outdoor patio. I stopped by for an iced coffee, though they also have some gelato that happens to be vegan. I inquired about vegan dessert. The employee told me that there is some vegan cake in the back, but it’s frozen in the freezer and they don’t serve it very often. I’m not sure if it’s possible to request a slice of the vegan cake in advance, but I’d love to see it appear in their display case regularly.
Bonus: The Green Root
Although it’s located across the Bay of Quinte in Prince Edward County, The Green Root technically has a Belleville address so I’ll include it in this guide. The Green Root is a health food store specializing in vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, and organic products. You can pick up some snacks, vegan cheese, and a variety of other veggie products here. It’s one of the best places for vegan food in Belleville.
