Italy is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, and it's a country we keep visiting again and again. The canals of Venice, the ruins of Pompeii, the beaches of the Amalfi Coast, the nature of the Dolomites, the history of Rome...there's so much to see and do in Italy.
And I haven't even mentioned the food yet! Italian cuisine is one delectable reason to plan your visit. We have quite a few travel guides and itineraries to help you plan your adventures in Italy.
What to Know Before You Go
- Currency: Euro. While most shops accept cards, it's still a good idea to carry some cash on you.
- Power: Plugs and sockets are type C, F and L. Voltage is 230 V 50 Hz.
- Official Language: Italian. Around 34% of the population speaks English.
- Capital City: Rome
Getting There and Getting Around
- Flights: The main airport of Italy is Rome Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino. Other popular airports you might fly into include Milan Malpensa, Naples, and Venice Marco Polo. Search for the best prices on flights with Skyscanner.
- Public Transportation: Italy has an extensive network of trains, buses and trams to get around the country. High speed trains connect Italy to other countries in Europe. Book your train and bus travel in one place with Omio.
- Renting a Car: Renting a car and driving around Italy makes it easier to get to those off the beaten path towns and villages. However, I wouldn't recommend renting a car in the major cities and places like the Amalfi Coast where the roads are difficult to navigate. We always use Discover Cars to find the best rates on car rentals.
- Uber: Uber is only available in the major cities and doesn't exist across the entire country.
