Warning: This vegan Playa del Carmen guide will make you hungry!

The two of us traveled to Playa del Carmen, Mexico for Justin’s birthday. We planned it on a whim and didn’t intend on doing very much while we were there. It would be four days of much needed rest and relaxation. I had no blogging commitments, no partnerships, and didn’t even feel compelled to post on social media. In short, I realize that we all need a vacation from time to time. When your job is all about travel, the lines between work and vacation become more blurred (not that I am complaining about that!). It’s good to take a break to recharge and rejuvenate, no matter where you work or what you do.

Okay, so we didn’t just lay on the beach for four days straight! Here’s my advice on how to spend one epic day in Playa del Carmen.

I didn’t realize this ahead of time, but Playa del Carmen has so many vegan restaurants. The vegan scene there is truly blossoming, and three new vegan restaurants have even popped up since our trip. And it’s not just for the tourists. While I’m sure that the healthy lifestyle choices are a big draw for visitors, there’s a local vegan scene in Playa del Carmen that’s growing, just as veganism is growing worldwide. We discovered that there are local vegan markets and vegan festivals in Playa del Carmen and Tulum. I’ll have to plan my next trip around one of these festivals!

I’m excited to share all of the delicious, colorful, and wholesome food we ate in this vegan Playa del Carmen guide. We found many traditional Mexican dishes prepared without the meat (but has all the yumminess). These are my favorite Playa del Carmen restaurants and some of the best food in Playa del Carmen. I highly recommend checking out all of these restaurants (don’t make me pick favorites!).

Vegan Playa del Carmen: La Senda Restaurante

Vegan Playa Del Carmen: La Senda Vegana Restaurant

La Senda Restaurante is the oldest of the vegan restaurants in Playa del Carmen, and there’s a reason why they’ve been in business all these years. While it’s not one of the Playa del Carmen restaurants on 5th avenue, it’s only one block up (10th avenue). Just a short walk from the main tourist center, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t wander for an extra minute to La Senda.

Their philosophy? They invite you to reconnect with whole and natural foods. La Senda prepares traditional dishes without any animal products. They prepare everything by hand in their small kitchen using the freshest ingredients possible: local and organic.

The menu is huge and there’s really something for every taste. You can have breakfast until 1:00pm, great for those late risers. You can order the regular lunch and dinner items at 12:00pm and later. There’s a section titled “A taste of Mexico”, as well as tacos or torta. There are starters, salads, and burgers. Even some of the beverages are traditional, or you can choose to order a smoothie, coffee, or tea.

Justin ordered a trio of tacos, and I got the Aztec cakes with green and red sauce. The food here is lovingly prepared and so delicious. The staff members are so friendly and made sure that we were happy. We chatted a bit about the local vegan scene in Playa del Carmen.

Later, I returned to La Senda to buy some of their chocolate cake to surprise Justin for his birthday! Topped with fresh fruits that matched the rich chocolate perfectly, we savored every last bite.

Fresco Habito

Vegan Playa Del Carmen: Fresco Habito

Fresco Habito is beautiful and delicious Playa del Carmen food for breakfast or lunch. The restaurant itself is spacious, clean, natural, and inviting. I loved the splashes of bright decor, matched with cozy wood finishes, jars of dry beans, and plants growing around the restaurant. It’s such a nice space, and the food tastes equally as good!

We ordered two smoothies and two lunch bowls. The bowls were piled high with fresh vegetables and various beans, served on top of rice. They were so artfully arranged and looked almost too pretty to eat. However, of course we ended up eating them, and I’m pretty sure I licked the bowl clean. I could eat food like this every single day and be the happiest person ever.

Clorofila Green & Vegan

Vegan Playa Del Carmen: Clorofila Green & Vegan

Clorofila Green & Vegan is a vegan restaurant in Playa del Carmen, and it’s also a health food store. They make their own vegan nut and seed cheese and sell a variety of supplements and beauty care products. Justin and I think that this is one of the best Playa del Carmen restaurants, even if you’re not vegan. I ate so much food here, until I physically couldn’t eat any longer! Then, we purchased some of the vegan cheese to bring back to our hotel for later. It was that good.

Vegan Playa Del Carmen: Clorofila Green & Vegan

Clorofila has an all day breakfast, with vegan omelettes, burritos, enchiladas, and more (breakfast done in both a Mexican style and an American style). For appetizers, there are many types of hummus and spreads, including the big cheese plate we ordered. Then, there are burgers and sandwiches as main courses, as well as tacos.

Yes, we ordered a massive cheese platter off their menu to start (which made us want to buy even more of it for later). Then, we ordered sandwiches and burgers for our mains, which came with sides of fries. The portions are pretty big, and we found that having the cheese platter and the main dishes was a lot of food. But, it was worth it! I highly recommend trying the beet burger. Justin even had his burger on top of a portobello mushroom.

Comet 984 – 50s Diner

Vegan Playa Del Carmen: Comet 884 Vegan Diner

Comet 984 is an all vegan 50s diner that’s beyond brilliant. It’s also a short walk from the Playa del Carmen restaurants on 5th avenue, but it’s worth the trip. First, you’ll notice that the decor of the restaurant is pure 1950s diner. There are old cartoons playing on a TV, the booths are super retro, and even the menus have a vintage vibe. It really took us right back in time!

Next, the food itself might not be the healthiest choice, but it’s a lot healthier than its meaty counterparts. You can order burgers, hot dogs, and milkshakes, all plant-based. After we placed our order, the staff members brought a complimentary plate of nachos and cheese to start, which was a nice touch. Our burgers and shakes were nothing short of amazing. If you’re looking for something on the decadent side, order the Snickers milkshake. You won’t be disappointed.

The Pitted Date

Vegan Playa Del Carmen: The Pitted Date

The Pitted Date is some of the best food in Playa del Carmen, whether you’re vegan, vegetarian, or an omnivore looking for healthier choices. It’s between another vegetarian spot and a yoga studio, so I felt totally in my element. It’s a vegan cafe, bakery, and they even make their own almond and coconut milk from scratch.

You’ll find breakfast (between 8am and 2pm), and lunch (from 12pm to 4pm), so we were able to order a little something from both menus. We couldn’t resist trying the “banana sushi” and it was banana wrapped in almond butter with agave and hemp hearts. YUM! Justin and I also got a duo of paninis, as well as super refreshing flavored chia seed water.

There’s a huge selection of vegan and raw desserts inside the restaurant, so you’ll have to save some room for dessert. Our banana sushi was a dessert in itself, although I’d love to try some of their baked goods next time.

Please note that since we visited, they have relocated, so some of the outdoor patio views won’t be the same when you dine there. The new address is noted below.

Marvin’s Burgers

Please note that this location of Marvin’s Burgers is now closed. However, they have plans to re-open in Playa del Carmen or perhaps in other parts of Mexico. Stay tuned.

Marvin’s Burgers is one of the Playa del Carmen restaurants on 5th avenue, right at the end of the street. It’s a little bit outside of the tourist area, but you should definitely check it out. Marvin’s Burgers is an awesome vegan Playa del Carmen restaurant, serving up burgers, fries, and hot dogs. You won’t have to worry about asking which items are vegan because they are all 100% plant-based. We took this Playa del Carmen food back to our hotel, as it’s possible to do takeout at this casual restaurant.

Honorable Mentions

Many vegan Playa del Carmen restaurants have opened since we visited in September 2017. I’m sure that even more will pop up in the future. Justin and I hope to head back down to the area to try out these new vegan restaurants in Playa del Carmen.

Nectar – Peace & Love Food

Playa del Carmen food doesn’t have to be expensive. Nectar – Peace & Love Food has some of the best prices among vegan and vegetarian places in town. They have a breakfast bar, as well as lunch and dinner meals. You’ll find wraps, bowls, tacos, smoothies, and more. While it’s a few blocks outside of the main tourist area (5th avenue), it’s worth the walk. Even though I haven’t personally tried it, I’ve read that it’s one of the best Playa del Carmen restaurants. You’ll have to try it and let me know what you think!

Peace & Bowl

Peace & Bowl offers healthy choices using lots of fresh ingredients, especially fruit. You’ll find smoothies, smoothie bowls, acai bowls, salads, and hummus. After spending hours in the hot sunshine, sometimes all you need is something light and refreshing. Peace & Bowl is surely a way to get your share of vitamins in their tasty concoctions.

Ta’consciente

Only open since March 2018, Ta’consciente is quickly becoming one of the best places to eat in Playa del Carmen. It’s an all vegan taco bar in Playa del Carmen and you can choose to add a variety of different salsas as toppings. If you’re looking for a plant-based take on traditional Mexican tacos, Ta’consciente is the spot for you.

Salvia

This restaurant existed while we visited Playa del Carmen, but we did not stay at the Sandos Caracol Eco Resort. Hopefully, we will stay at this wonderful resort in the future and I’ll be able to personally write about it. I love that there’s a vegan restaurant at a resort (I’d likely dine there every day!). Please note that you can dine at Salvia even if you’re not staying overnight at the hotel, but you must purchase a day pass.

Where to Stay

Justin and I stayed at the gorgeous Playa Palms Beach Hotel. It’s a very calm and quiet hotel with a pool and access to the beach. The hotel isn’t an all inclusive resort, but that wasn’t an issue. Every room has a balcony with a hammock and our stay included breakfast daily. On many occasions, we had the pool to ourselves and this hotel was always a peaceful retreat. Click here to read reviews written by other frequent travelers.

Vegan breakfast at Playa Palms Beach Hotel - Playa del Carmen, Mexico

I hope that you’ve enjoyed reading this Playa del Carmen food guide, and now you know where to find all of the vegan restaurants. We were totally blown away by the amount of vegan food in Playa del Carmen, and it’s one reason why we loved this beach town so much. I recommend getting off the resort, staying at a local beachfront hotel in town, and dining at all of these restaurants. It’s fairly inexpensive, and the food is fresh, healthy, and delicious. It’s the best way to dine as a vegan in Playa del Carmen, as you won’t find this much innovative plant-based food at a typical resort.
