The Temple Bar neighborhood (not to be confused with the Temple Bar Pub) is the most popular and well known area of Dublin. Just south of the River Liffey, this lively Dublin neighborhood is located between Trinity College and the main shopping street, Grafton Street.
Stay here if you want to be in the middle of all the action. It's a prime location for Irish pubs, good craic, and boisterous nightlife. Aside from nighttime events, Temple Bar is also perfect for daytime attractions like unique shopping and markets, museums, art galleries, and fine dining restaurants. Don't stay here if you aren't a fan of crowds and noise. It can get loud and rowdy, especially on the weekends. It is also one of the more expensive areas to stay in Dublin. You will pay a premium to stay at such a prime location that's close to most attractions and activities in the city.

This includes Grafton Street, Trinity College, and St. Stephen's Green. There is an interesting mix of old meets new when it comes to style and vibes.
This is the main hub of Dublin, and staying here means that you're near most attractions, activities and restaurants. You'll be close to Dublin Castle, the world-class shopping on Grafton Street, and the National Museum Of Ireland. You'll be able to admire intriguing architecture, enjoy charming cafes, and visit some of Dublin's oldest churches. If you're looking for a restaurant, I highly recommend checking out Cornucopia, a longtime staple in the city.
As Dublin City Center is a more touristy area, you may opt to stay at a quieter or up-and-coming neighborhood. It may be more expensive to stay here than other areas, though you may be able to find more affordable accommodations than on O'Connell Street or Temple Bar.

This is a lovely place for relaxed sightseeing, bars and dining establishments (including Michelin Star restaurants) and an overall great place to go for a wander. You are also still quite close to the busier places in town that are more touristed, and you'll be able to easily walk to most attractions from here.
If you are looking to stay in the center of the action, I wouldn't recommend Merrion Square. It gets quieter in the evening and you'd need to walk to the more lively nightlife hotspots. However, this is a great place to stay for families and those seeking a more peaceful environment at night.

At the same time, other craft breweries and distilleries have surfaced in this same neighborhood. So, this is a must visit place for those who love the craft beverage scene. There are also some cool shops, cafes and restaurants as well. You aren't too far from the main attractions at Temple Bar and O'Connell Street either.
The Liberties is seemingly outside the most happening areas of Dublin, so you may opt not to stay there for this reason. If you don't have much interest in visiting the Guinness Storehouse or microbreweries and distilleries, there may not be as much of a draw either.

It can be difficult to find longer term rentals in Dublin, but this Liberties apartment is a fantastic choice.

Portobello is one of the coolest neighborhoods in Dublin that you may want to call home when you're traveling to the city. While it's mainly a residential area that's come to be quite gentrified over the years, it has a strong village vibe with many restaurants and pubs.
Known as "Little Jerusalem" and home to the Irish Jewish Museum, Portobello has a great nightlife scene (though calmer than Temple Bar and Trinity College). When you're not browsing the modern galleries or dining at eclectic eateries, go for a stroll on the Grand Canal. Portobello is a fine choice for couples and families alike.
Who might not love Portobello? As Portobello has more of a hip style, it's not the best if you're looking for upscale accommodations. If you want to be in the middle of the most happening nightlife, Temple Bar or Dublin City Center are better choices.

This is a massive, 2000 square foot loft-style penthouse with amazing views overlooking the city. There are three bedrooms (sleeps six), two bathrooms and two living areas. The penthouse is set on two floors, so it's like having two luxury suites in one.

The Docklands are home to modern architecture, several museums, entertainment venues and delectable cuisine. Take a river cruise or hop aboard a kayak or standup paddleboard for a unique view of the city. The Docklands are within walking distance of most areas around the city center of Dublin, too.
While it might be a little off the beaten tourist path, the Docklands can be a pricier area to stay as it's aimed at business travelers. For those who love walking around public parks and squares, the Docklands may feel too sterile with a lack of trees and nature.
Beckett Locke
Beckett Locke is a beautiful apart-hotel with modern amenities and gorgeous design. There are several different apartments and suites to suit every kind of traveler. This accommodation offers free Wi-Fi and it also has a fitness center, too. Conveniently located in the Docklands, you're not far from most popular attractions.
Kelly stayed here and writes: Brilliant location right near the Luas stop. The apartment was clean and bright with everything you needed such as hairdryer, kitchen appliances and utensils, bathroom products etc. Comfy beds and was very cosy.

Best Dublin Airbnbs: Smithfield
On Dublin's northside, Smithfield has had a gritty and industrial reputation for decades. Nowadays, there are cute shops, great restaurants and hip hotels. You'll gain more insights into local daily life as someone living in Dublin. There's no shortage of family-friendly festivals, bustling pubs, and warehouse pubs where you can party until the early hours of the morning.
At the same time, staying in Smithfield is a budget-friendly place in Dublin where you'll be able to stretch your dollar (or Euro!) a little farther. Smithfield is still only about a 10-minute walk to Temple Bar and other main attractions. You're also not far from the massive Phoenix Park with its walking trails, gardens, and possible spot for wild deer sightings.
While you will likely save some coin by staying in Smithfield, you won't be in the middle of the action. You can be well connected by public transit, but it will be a jaunt by foot if you want to visit Trinity College, Merrion Square or Portobello. It's close to being centrally located to everything, but not as much as some other neighborhoods.

Just west of Smithfield, Stoneybatter is nestled right up to the edge of Phoenix Park and it's one of the hippest areas of Dublin. There are numerous pubs, restaurants, and cafes in Stoneybatter, and you'll catch even more glimpses into local life in Dublin.
Stoneybatter is farther off the beaten track, so you won't find many touristy places or souvenir shops here. There are many fantastic pubs and a great nightlife scene here. If you're looking for a slice of local culture, Stoneybatter comes highly recommended.
On the flip side, you'll need to walk more or take public transit to get into the main areas of the city. If you're visiting Dublin mostly for the attractions and museums, you may choose to stay elsewhere. Stoneybatter isn't the most inexpensive part of Dublin as it is alluring to visitors, but it will be generally less expensive than Temple Bar and Trinity College.

It doesn't get much more charming than this! This Charming Cottage in Stoneybatter lives up to its name. Situated in a 100-year old house, this home exudes so much old school Dublin character. There are many original features, including solid wooden floors and a cast iron fireplace. There are two bedrooms and two full bathrooms along with a living room and fully equipped kitchen. This is one of the most unique Airbnbs for sure.

Best Dublin Airbnbs: Phibsborough
Phibsborough (or Phibsboro) is quickly becoming a favorite area to stay among Dublin travelers. This neighborhood offers a more relaxed atmosphere than some of the other spots around Dublin. It was also recently called one of the "World's Coolest Neighborhoods" according to Time Out Magazine.
While it's only just off the main tourist path, Phibsborough has its own collection of coffee shops, restaurants and brew pubs. As a pretty even mix of residential and commercial, it's a peaceful place to call home. It's also not too far from the National Botanic Gardens if you're seeking a local attraction.
I've stayed in a Phibsborough apartment and ran into an issue with the parking. There isn't much space for overnight parking that isn't assigned to residents in some spaces. We ended up paying for public parking at the nearby hospital parking garage, so it all worked out. It's something to keep in mind if you are renting a car in Dublin.
Sonder Mountjoy Square
Sonder Mountjoy Square is a stunning apartment in Phibsborough, less than 1 km of Croke Park Stadium and a 16-minute walk of Connolly Train Station. This apartment-hotel has 22 accommodation units that are individually decorated and fully furnished. They have fully equipped kitchens, a dining area, a flatscreen TV with digital channels and designer toiletries.
Louis succinctly writes: Great location and good facilities, plenty of space and a straightforward check in/checkout.
Damian had an enjoyable stay: Nice wee room with everything two travellers need. Self-check in, friendly receptionist, and very warm inside. Great value for money, especially when 100€ doesn't get you far these days.
Three Bedroom Victorian Townhouse
This is such a rare find! This Three Bedroom Victorian Townhouse was built in 1864, and it is suitable for a maximum of 6 people or family. It's just a 10 minute walk to the city center. Enjoy three bedrooms, a bathroom, a spacious and bright living room, and a fully equipped kitchen. This place is highly decorated with hand forged wrought iron mirrors, original oil paintings and stained glass lamps. You get the entire home. It's truly a gem!
Sarah loved it: Our stay in Dublin was lovely! Although in an older neighborhood in Dublin, the house is within walking distance of all the places you might want to visit. The house was well stocked with everything we needed for our 6-night stay. John was a charming and accommodating host!

John welcomed us upon arrival, gave us a tour of the house, had lovely lilies on the shelf, milk in the fridge for morning coffee. We immediately felt at home. Best Dublin Airbnbs: Rathmines
Situated in Southside, the community of Rathmines is a good home base for exploring Dublin. There aren't many attractions or activities in Rathmines itself, so you will likely spend the night here and leave each day. That's totally fine if you're looking for one of the best Airbnbs in Dublin for a less costly price that has a local feel.
The main downside of staying in Rathmines is the fact that there isn't much to do there. You will need to travel by bus or walking to get to the popular tourist attractions, excursions and nightlife. You will likely save some money by staying in Rathmines, however.
Edwardian Townhouse in Rathmines
Situated on a quiet cul-de-sac, this traditional Edwardian townhome is a wonderful place to stay in Rathmines, Dublin. It's just ten minutes by bike or car to the city center. With four spacious double bedrooms, it's the perfect place for the whole family to stay. There's also a bright back garden to enjoy, as well as a large kitchen. This is one of the best Airbnbs in Dublin and was featured as one of the top 10 places to stay in Ireland on LovinTrends.

Rathmines Apartment
This is a first floor modern apartment in Rathmines that feels like home. This is a two bedroom apartment with its own parking. While it is a bit of a distance from the city center, you can easily reach it via LUAS or bus. This is an affordable place to stay in Dublin with many contemporary features. It's one of the best Airbnbs in Dublin for sure with great Airbnb hosts.
Jessica reviews the Airbnb: Elaine and the team have been immaculate throughout our experience, so helpful and accommodating of two little ones. Could not ask for more. We loved our stay! Especially our 3 year old who said her goodbyes to each space before we left.

Best Dublin Airbnbs: Ranelagh
Also located in Southside next to Rathmines, you'll find the neighborhood of Ranelagh. It has a village-like atmosphere and it's home to many pubs and restaurants. While this is an affluent neighborhood, it is regarded as one of the coolest suburbs in Dublin. It can be an excellent home base when visiting the city.
In Ranelagh, you will find numerous parks and gardens, so it is a lovely place to go for a walk. Other than dining or drinking at the trendy establishments in Ranelagh, you'll likely be venturing out of the neighborhood to go sightseeing. Depending on where you stay in Ranelagh, you aren't terribly far from Merrion Square or many of the main sights in the city center.
Six Bedroom Georgian Townhome
This Six Bedroom Georgian Townhome in Ranelagh is perfect if you have a large family or group of friends and you want to stay in the same place. It's a newly renovated home, bright and spacious, with room for everyone! It has six bedrooms, two bathrooms within a three level house. Period features are incorporated into modern renovations, giving this home the right amount of charm and contemporary vibes.
One reviewer exclaims: The house was perfect for our large group, clean comfortable roomy. The hosts were super responsive and left a wonderful welcome basket. The neighborhood is awesome! Would love to come back for a repeat stay!
Another guest writes: This house was perfect for my bachelorette party/hen party! It has multiple beds, living room space and two bathrooms for us all to use. They had extra adaptors and games and basically anything we would've needed they had in the house which was wonderful! Rugby Lodge in Ranelagh
The Rugby Lodge in Ranelagh is a period property on a quiet residential road, just minutes from Ranelagh Village. There are three comfortable bedrooms, a large living room and a huge kitchen. You'll have everything you need to cook a great meal. Plus, there's a private back garden that makes this place extra special.
One guest shares: We booked our stay for about three weeks and it was the perfect accommodation for the five of us. It was a fantastic location in Ranelagh Village and just a few stops on the light rail system to Dublin city center. Ranelagh had several restaurants, pubs, and shops within walking distance. The stay was located in a residential area so no problem having windows open at night.
Another honest review: This house with its three bedrooms was in a perfect location for a meeting of three sisters who live thousands of miles apart. Access to public transportation is great and means you don't need a car to get around Dublin. The house itself was as advertised and comfortable. But no designated parking space was an issue, and the street parking wasn't always easy.

Private and Public Transportation to Dublin
If you're not renting a car and you're looking to get from the Dublin Airport to Dublin City Centre, there are a few options. First, you can arrange for a private transfer from the airport to the city. This is the easiest and most luxurious option. You can also get a taxi on arrival.
There isn't a rail service between Dublin city and the airport. But, you can take the Dublin Bus. Route 41 operates on a 24 hour service between the Dublin International Airport and the city center, and Route 16 is another option. Please check the Dublin Bus website for details.
Once I was in Dublin, I parked the car and walked around everywhere. Dublin is a very walkable city and you'll be able to get pretty much everywhere on your own two feet. You can walk to every attraction in this Dublin one day itinerary.

Great question! If your accommodation doesn't come with a parking space, I would choose a parking lot that offers a flat-rate parking fee for overnight / 24 hours. Try one of the Q-Park lots, Parkrite lots, or the Euro Car Parks Convention Centre Car Park.
