Kayaking is one of my favourite activities to do while travelling. Not only is it a great way to exercise while having fun, but you can often reach places that are not otherwise accessible. Paddling around by small boat allows you to reach narrow coves, isolated islands, and secluded places waiting to be uncovered. For wildlife lovers, it’s easy to marvel at beautiful creatures living in their natural habitat, and closer than ever before.

Australia has an abundance of stunning landscapes and captivating creatures to stumbleupon. Here are five Australian kayaking adventures you simply must experience in your lifetime.

Scattered off the Queensland Coast, the Whitsundays are a collection of 74 islands along the Great Barrier Reef. Kayaking around this region is a great introduction to oceanic adventures; the waters of the Coral Sea are quite calm. Spot underwater sea creatures like anemones, massive clams, and brightly coloured schools of fish. You might even drift past manta rays, loggerhead turtles, or even dolphins.

Hop between picturesque white sand beaches on a day trip or spend magical nights beneath the stars at campsites for a lengthier trip around the archipelago. Rent a kayak or buy a used one which you can resell back at the end of your trip for an affordable paddling vacation.

Paddling through the Noosa Everglades is a peaceful day trip to immerse yourself in nature. Traverse down the clear waters of the Noosa River to marvel at gnarled mangroves and migratory birds. The Noosa River is part of the Noosa Biosphere Reserve, which includes 150,000 hectares of land and wetlands. It’s Queensland’s first UNESCO Biosphere as a significant Australian ecosystem.

Looking for a unique viewpoint of Sydney’s famous attractions? Kayaking the Sydney Harbour allows you to gain a unique perspective. To make the most of your time, it’s best to book a kayaking tour with an established company, such as Oz Paddle. Paddle your way around the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Farm Cove, and even the Sydney Opera House.

Taking a tour is a great idea for beginners as you’ll get tips from seasoned experts. Furthermore, these waters are ideal for those new to kayaking as you won’t face too many obstacles on your journey.

There’s no shortage of awesome kayaking adventures in Tasmania. With rugged coastlines and over 300 islands surrounding Tasmania, there’s so much to explore. To discover a vast array of sea and bird life, check out the Freycinet Peninsula on the east coast. For breathtaking scenic views, paddle your way through the D’Entrecasteux Channel and Bruny Island. Trips around Fortescue Bay offer views of impressive natural phenomena, like the Totem Pole and Candlestick rock formations. It’s also quite possible that you might spot seal colonies, too.

For something even more adventurous, consider a white water kayaking trip through Tasmania’s river rapids. The south of Tasmania has class one, two, and three rapids across the Picton, Huon and Derwent Rivers. In the north, daredevils can challenge themselves to navigating the Mersey and North Esk Rivers with class three and four rapids.

Explore the Katherine Gorge National Park at your own pace by kayaking the freshwater Katherine River. It’s a great opportunity to drift along at your own pace, stopping whenever and wherever you’d like to climb the rocks or go for a swim. Glide down the river and you might come across diverse species of birds, turtles, and even crocodiles.
