The Worms Christmas Market (Wormser Weihnachtmarkt) is a delightful holiday festival held in the historic city center of Worms, Germany. It's not far from other local markets in Mainz, Mannheim and Frankfurt, making it an ideal addition to your German Christmas Market itinerary.
It's centered around the Obermarkt square with over 50 stalls to discover where you can shop, eat and drink. While the Christmas market in Worms is small, it's a longstanding tradition that goes back decades with some unique happenings.

This Christmas market is often referred to as "Nibelungen Christmas", which pays tribute to the legendary Nibelungs (a German royal family from medieval times).
There's no shortage of Christmas lights, festive decor, wooden stalls, and holiday merriment everywhere you look. It's possible to visit the Worms Christmas Market in an hour or two, though you may wish to stay longer to immerse yourself in its magical atmosphere.

Visiting the Worms Christmas Market

The Worms Christmas Market takes place annually throughout the historic old town. Some key locations to mark down on your map are Parmaplatz, the Obermarkt, the Winzerbrunnen and the Römischer Kaiser.
These are the locations where you'll find all the festivities, and it's easy to walk from one place to the next. Here are the dates and times for the Worms Christmas Market:
Worms Christmas Market 2025
- November 23rd to December 23rd, 2025
- Daily from 11:00am to 8:00pm, mulled wine stalls open until 10:00pm
There are some interesting events at Wormser Weihnacht that make it so intriguing and different from other markets.
First, the "Turmblasen" takes place on the Third Sunday of Advent. Located between the Imperial Cathedral and the Magnus Church, the townsfolk come together to sing Christmas carols to music provided by a brass ensemble.
From time to time, there are other creative performances and even flute flash mobs.

Another highlight of the Worms Christmas Market is the living nativity scene. There are life-sized carved wooden figures and live animals in the nearby stable.
Some of the mulled wine stands serve wine produced by local vintners. Worms is located within a renowned wine region, so you'll be able to sip wine from local vineyards at this holiday market.
I immediately noted that the Worms Christmas Market seemed less commercial than some of the other larger markets. There's more of an emphasis on locally produced food and drink, handicrafts, and community.
German Christmas Markets and Gluhwein Explained
If you've never been to a Christmas market in Germany before, let me briefly explain how purchasing gluhwein works. Each city, town and Christmas market will have its own unique mug.
- When you purchase a mug of gluhwein (mulled wine), you will pay an additional small deposit (pfand) for the mug. This is usually only a couple of Euros at most. When you bring back the mug, you will receive your deposit back.
- You can also choose to keep the mug as a souvenir. I fell in love with the mugs at the Christmas markets and decided to collect one from each market. As we visited several Christmas markets, I returned home with nine mugs in total!
These are a really inexpensive souvenir that reminds me of my trip to the Christmas markets. I put up a little shelf in my kitchen where I have all of my mugs displayed quite nicely.
Dom St. Peter
When you visit Worms, make sure you make a special trip to visit St. Peter's Cathedral (Dom St. Peter). This cathedral dates back to the early days of Christianity at the end of the Roman period, and it's one of the great Romanesque churches along the Rhine.

Though there was an earlier basilica at this site, the current cathedral was built between 1130 and 1181. Many important events have taken place here over the years, including the crowning of Pope (Leo IX) in 1048.
