I’ll never forget the moment we first saw the view from our balcony…
When we arrived at the Hotel Allegro Bern, we immediately felt its majestic atmosphere and welcoming presence. An iconic life sized bear greets you in the lobby, the animal for which the city was named. The front desk staff were friendly and helpful right from the start. There are several reasons why staying at the Hotel Allegro Bern was extremely memorable.
First, Kursaal Bern is an all-in-one building in the middle of it all. It’s a 4-star hotel (Hotel Allegro), a congress centre, three specialty restaurants (one has 1 Michelin star), and a casino. Fresh vegetables grow up on the rooftop for the restaurants. The outdoor patio is a lively meeting place with a tranquil koi pond and greenery. The spacious foyer, lecture spaces, and meeting rooms are ideal for conferences, with a capacity of up to 1500 people. While we were there simply as hotel guests, the bright and airy ambiance of the congress centre echoed throughout the entire hotel.
Next, Justin and I stayed in one of the Panorama Club rooms on the 4th floor. Every panorama room has luxurious amenities for the most comfortable stay. These include a Nespresso coffee maker and a B&O music system with iPod docking. There’s also a roomy desk with an ample amount of outlets for your devices. Furthermore, there’s a flatscreen TV with premium channels and complimentary Wi-Fi. Above all, you’ll get a wonderful night’s sleep in this quiet room, and the bed is like sleeping on a cloud.
The bathroom has a shower and a tub (I love this as I prefer hot baths!), lots of counter space, heated flloors, and complimentary bathrobes to use throughout your stay. Consequently, there are premium toiletries, a hair dryer, and a make-up mirror, as you’ll find there’s attention paid to every small detail.
Finally, I’ve saved the best part for last. I’ll never forget the moment we first saw the view from our balcony. I threw open the curtains and the scenery was nothing short of astonishing. From our room, we caught our first glimpses of Old Town Bern, the bridge we’d cross several times to get into town, and the spectacular turquoise river. I spent long stretches of time peering out over the rooftops towards the massive church in the middle of town. It was easy to admire this charming capital city right from the cozy room or outdoors on the balcony with the breeze in my hair.
On our last night in Bern, I awoke to a thunderstorm. I quietly slipped out to the balcony to watch flashes of lightning illuminate the entire panoramic view. It’s a wonderful memory that I’ll carry for a long time. The peaceful moments alternated with startling ones. Boom. Crackle. Nature put on a brilliant show. This balcony and view is one reason why you need to book this hotel when you travel to Bern.
A PINT ON THE PATIO
We highly suggest that you take advantage of the relaxing outdoor patio. There’s plush patio furniture and umbrellas to protect you from the harsh, midday sunlight. Justin and I decided to unwind by the serene pond with a cold glass of beer. As a result, it was the first thing we did in Bern because we wanted to ease ourselves into this new place.
Naturally, after a few hectic moments at the train stations between Bern and Strasbourg, we couldn’t wait to take it easy. Bern was the first city we visited in Switzerland, and the hotel property provided a fantastic introduction to such an outstanding and vibrant country.
The Hotel Allegro Bern overlooks the entire city from up on the hill. There’s a transit stop directly outside the front of the hotel where you can quickly get wherever you need to be. From the hotel, you can hitch a ride to the base of the hill which puts you in the middle of old town (a two minute bus ride away). It’s only a short jaunt from the beautiful rose garden. Furthermore, you can go to the main train station to travel onto your next destination. Likewise, the bus will take you directly to the base of the Gurten, Bern’s local mountain.
The transit pass is free with your stay, so you can travel freely throughout town as much as you like. Alternatively, you can walk directly from the hotel right into town and back in no time. We enjoyed walking the most because it meant that we could gaze at the most turquoise river we’d ever seen.
