Making our way around Iceland's Ring Road on a two week road trip of the country, we spent two evenings in the stunning Myvatn region. Justin and I spent two nights at Skutustadir Farm Guesthouse at the southern end of Lake Myvatn.
At this guesthouse, there are various types of lodging for many preferences and budgets. I'll outline the various accommodations on site, and we stayed at their luxurious cottage. Skútustaðir Farm Guesthouse is postcard perfect with a beautiful backdrop of snow-capped mountains.

During our stay at Skutustadir Farm Guesthouse, we made the private cottage our home on Lake Myvatn. I'll quickly go over the three kinds of lodging that's available, and then I'll go into more detail about our cottage stay.
Skutustadir Farm Guesthouse: Types of Lodging

There are a variety of lodging options at Skutustadir Farm Guesthouse that are suitable for all preferences and budgets.
First, the main building: there are six rooms available for one, two or three people. The showers and toilets are separate from the bedrooms and there is one shared living room. Your stay includes breakfast and Wi-Fi is complimentary.
Next, the separate building: there are five rooms available with an en-suite bathroom. Guests have access to the kitchen and living room in the main building. Your stay includes breakfast.
Third, the new building: there are three double rooms with a shared bathroom and one family room. The family room has space for parents and a smaller room with bunkbeds for children. There is a private bathroom. Breakfast and Wi-Fi are included.
Last, the cottage: it is one private cottage with two double rooms and a sleeping loft. It has its own bathroom, kitchen, living room and a private deck. Breakfast isn't included because you can cook your own meals, but you can choose to add one. Wi-Fi is included.
Skutustadir Farm Guesthouse: Our Cottage
The cottage is bright and beautiful with an open concept layout. There are a few couches and chairs in the living space where we relaxed, read books, and used the complimentary Wi-Fi.

Cooking food in this kitchen was a breeze. There is a spacious kitchen, which includes a full-sized refrigerator, stove, oven, sink, cutlery, plates, and all kinds of cookware.
This kitchen was valuable as we cooked most of our meals ourselves throughout our trip to Iceland. You can cook or bake anything you'd like as this kitchen was outfitted with every appliance and utensil you could ever need.
The Bedrooms and Loft Space
There is ample sleeping space for six at this private cottage. Justin and I slept in one bedroom, there is a second bedroom that sleeps two, and there is an upstairs loft that could also sleep two more.

This cottage is perfect for families or multiple couples traveling together. From the loft, we had a great view looking directly down on the living room and kitchen. The accommodation has a very open and light, airy feel to it.
The Bathroom
The bathroom has a shower, a sink and mirror, and a small table for storing your toiletries. There is also a hair dryer available for use. Everything looked brand new - bright, clean, and white.

I could see that sharing a bathroom amongst six people could be a little bit crowded, so this cottage may be more suitable for a family with kids or two couples rather than four. However, if you don't mind sharing the bathroom among six people, you could all stay here without any problems.
The Deck and the Property
There is a private deck with a picnic table attached to the cottage. You could dine outdoors with a beautiful view.
Be warned: there are quite a few midge flies around Lake Myvatn. This is very common in the entire region surrounding the lake and beyond. You can't really escape them.

They were quite prevalent during our stay in June. After all, Lake Myvatn is named after those little bugs!
Of course, don't let this deter you from visiting the area or staying here (after all, the flies will be at every accommodation). We enjoyed admiring the view from inside while we ate our meals.
Skutustadir Farm Guesthouse: The Location

Skutustadir Farm Guesthouse is located at the southern end of Lake Myvatn, about a 15-minute detour off the Ring Road. We drove by a few sites on our way to the farmhouse, including Dimmuborgir and Grjotagja (the cave where scenes from Game of Thrones was filmed).
These are a few places that we visited on our journey, and they were right near our cottage. It was also a short drive to several popular sites: Myvatn Nature Baths, the Namafjall geothermal area, Selfoss, Dettifoss, and Krafla.
We happily used Skutustadir Farm Guesthouse as our home base for two days. You can learn about all of the top attractions in the region in our Myvatn travel guide.
The Staff at Skútustaðir Farm Guesthouse

Since their beginnings in 1988, Skutustadir Farm Guesthouse is family owned and operated, right on their family property. They started with an expansion of their own home, adding new rooms and new houses as time went on.
The entire operation is run by members of the family, whether it's booking and reception, cleaning and washing, or cooking the breakfast.
Unlike some properties in Iceland, you can book your stay all year long, with an exception for the Christmas and Easter holidays. However, the rooms with the private bathrooms are only available from May to October.
The farm has cows, sheep and horses. During the summer months after lambing season, the sheep are wandering freely around the mountains. If you visit during the spring, you might be able to see some of the new baby lambs, so cute!
We loved our time at Skutustadir Farm Guesthouse Myvatn. The cottage was spacious and it's located ideally for nearby natural attractions. The property was calming and peaceful with gorgeous scenery all around.
Book your stay at Skutustadir Farm Guesthouse. No matter whether you stay at the cottage or the other rooms, you're sure to have an amazing experience.
