Travel Blogger Thursday: Ashley of A Southern Gypsy

Ashley in Venice

For today’s Travel Blogger Thursday, we interviewed Ashley of A Southern Gypsy. Ashley is leaving her job in the Fall to travel all over the world! It has been great following along on her blog as she prepares and saves towards her journey, and we can’t wait to continue reading as she departs across the globe to Asia!

What inspires you to travel and what do you enjoy most about traveling?

I’ve never liked staying in one spot.  I’ve moved around a lot and travel as much as possible.  I want to see as much of the world as possible – one corner of it isn’t enough for me.  The idea of not being able to see everything actually terrifies me.  So, that’s what inspires me.

Where is your favourite destination and why?

For my all time favorite (of the places I’ve been) it’d have to be London.  It’s always been a special place to me – even before I went there.  I could seriously (and have) just walk the streets all day.

When did you start to travel, and where did you first visit?

I’ve been traveling my entire life – I’m from Tennessee but we had loads of family both in New York and Florida so every year we would usually spend time in both places.  As an addition to those trips, I got to visit Canada and Niagara Falls many times as well as Disney World and so on.  I went on a cruise to Alaska and have been all over the United States.

As for my first big trip…when I was 18, I went to Europe for the first time visiting England, Ireland, Scotland, Netherlands, Norway, and France for about three weeks. This is what gave me my first real taste of travel and I haven’t stopped chasing it since.

Why did you start your blog, and what do you enjoy most about blogging?

I started my blog in September of last year when I first decided what I was going to – quit my job to travel long term.  I knew I wouldn’t be quitting until October of this year but I wanted to share my experience of preparing for long term travel and really network within this community before leaving.

Blogging is a lot of hard work, but even when I’m up until the middle of the night, or stressed because I have a deadline or want to throw my computer out the window because of some coding issue, I still don’t hate it.  There’s something to be said about something that can exhaust you and you still love it.  I also love all the other wonderful travel bloggers I’ve had a chance to get to know – it really is a great community.

What do you like to bring back from the places you’ve visited?

Well, I’ve always collected shot glasses from the places I go and I love them as souvenirs, but that will unfortunately not continue since I’ll be traveling long term with just a backpack.  Pictures are going to be my one and only constant souvenir now.

You have a very big trip that you’ve been preparing for! Tell us more about it!

In October, I will be quitting my job.  I’ll first be going on a one week trip to Disney World with family, then a 4 day trip to Athens, Greece for the TBEX conference, then a roadtrip from Tennessee to Los Angeles, California before heading to Bangkok, Thailand.  I’ll be in Southeast Asia from the beginning of November until an undetermined end date.  I plan on seeing all of the Southeast Asia countries along with a bit of Australia, Samoa and hopefully Sri Lanka and Hong Kong if time and money allows.
