For Travel Blogger Thursday, we interviewed The Guy Who Flies.
The Guy Who Flies has two travel blogs: Flights and Frustration and Travel Blogger Interviews. As for, “The Guy”, he’s a frequent business traveler who has racked up over a million frequent flyer miles with over 2000 flights! Wowza. Without further ado, here’s the interview so you can learn more about his intriguing travel stories.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO TRAVEL? WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT TRAVELING?
The overwhelming majority of my travel for the last 16 years has been business related so I travel to perform my work. Even still, I manage to get in personal travel where I can. I do love the whole buzz about travel. I’ve experienced so many different places and people. I’ve made friends around the world and so many places feel like a second home. On the plus side, if I don’t like or get bored with a place, I know that I’ll soon be moving on to a different spot soon.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DESTINATION AND WHY?
I’m often asked this and there is never quite a concrete answer. As far as cities go, I fell in love with Prague from my early twenties and would love to return there. It is such a beautiful city with great architecture, romance and affordability. As a destination, I could quite easily up sticks and take permanent root in Queensland, Australia. The climate is so tropical and perfect. The scenery and beaches are breathtaking. The laid back lifestyle is also very contagious. It is the only place in the world where I’ve been in an airport and literally everybody was smiling.

WHEN DID YOU START TO TRAVEL? WHERE DID YOU VISIT?
I don’t remember my first trip because I was far too young. Both my parents are Irish whilst I was born in England. We used to make trips to Dublin maybe 2-3 times a year as I was growing up. I first truly began independent international travel in my University years when I went interrailing around Europe for a month.
WHY DID YOU START YOUR BLOG AND WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST?
As a seasoned traveler, I have many experiences alone. I usually travel alone and outside of office hours can plenty of “me time”. My experiences were often falling into the trenches of my memory and I felt that I need to keep a record. Initially, I was going to place what I thought were memorable observations into a book, also called Flights And Frustration. However a rather unfortunate incident ruined that. Hence, I decided to write a blog instead.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO BRING BACK FROM PLACES YOU’VE VISITED?
To be honest with all my work papers, computers and work clothes there is often not much space for mementos or gifts. My wife, however, does love cuddly toys so I will often pick up a little teddy from somewhere for her. We have quite a collection of soft toy penguins, koalas, pandas to name but three.
WHERE ARE YOU OFF TO NEXT?
As I write this I am in China. However I will have a whistle stop tour back to the UK before venturing off to Pennsylvania. Yes, my work travel is global.
