Travel Blogger Thursday: SJ Begonja of Chasing the Donkey

For this week’s Travel Blogger Thursday, we interviewed SJ Begonja of Chasing the Donkey. As a frequent reader of Chasing the Donkey, let me tell you – this blog has made me REALLY want to travel to Croatia! All you have to do is read some of her blog posts and see some of the beautiful photographs, and you’ll understand completely. Let’s learn more about the lovely Mrs. Chasing The Donkey!

What inspires you to travel and what do you enjoy most about traveling?

My inspiration comes from curiosity. I need to see and look and feel and of course touch new things. I get bored so very quickly and traveling gives me the ability to seek out new people, places and my favourite thing about travelling – new foods!

Onions, freshly picked from her organic garden!

Where is your favourite destination and why?

Having spent time over 20 countries and now exploring Croatia on a micro level, I really can’t say where my favourite place was or is. I liken it to people asking a mother which of her children is her favourite. It’s impossible to choose. For now though, I am LOVING exploring my new country of Croatia.

When did you start to travel, and where did you first visit?

My first plane trip was when I was 20 with my then boyfriend (now husband), he booked tickets for what was a ‘mystery flight’. You would arrive at the airport not having any idea where you were going. I was scared to death. I cried, he laughed and we had the most amazing weekend. We have not stopped travelling in the last 15 years.

Why did you decide to move to Croatia?

Family. I wanted to give my son a life that was impossible in Sydney. One by the beach, growing our own vegetables, and to live in a place that would allow us to explore Europe, other cultures and have him speak more than just English at school.

What are your favourite things about living in an entirely new country? What do you find most challenging?

For me I simply love the relaxed lifestyle. The pace is so slow, and no one is in much of a hurry (with the exception of those maniac drivers on the road) and I feel so calm here. On the flip side the challenges I face daily are also related to how relaxed the country is. Paperwork, forms and other administration duties seem to take an age.

Beautiful Croatia

Why did you start your blog, and what do you enjoy most about blogging?

It was a way to connect with family and friends at first. Then, it was a way to connect with other expats and travellers, and it became a part of my everyday without much thought. Then, as more and more people starting asking me advice about living and travelling in Croatia, it seemed natural to combine what I enjoyed about putting words on the interweb with answering peoples’ questions. I am now addicted. Fully and utterly in love with Croatia and my blog. You should see me when the blog goes down, or we have an electricity outage…

What do you like to bring back from the places you’ve visited?

When I was travelling internationally, it was mostly art and postcards. I have so so so many postcards I want to make a book of them all one day. Now, it’s just memories. I spend no time looking for souvenirs or postcards as I have no more room to put them. That is of course until I get my dream house built.

Where do you plan on visiting next?

I am meeting friends in Tuscany over the summer, for one glorious week of drinking wine and swimming. We also have a few beach spots marked on the calendar for July and August, before a trip to Athens in October. It’s non stop around my place!

We cannot wait to hear about your summer travels and life around Croatia as you explore your wonderful country more and more! To connect with Chasing The Donkey on social media, you can visit the blog or these pages:

I lived in Croatia for a short time and your stories bring me back. I know exactly what you mean with the paperwork. I had to buy my court paperwork from a newspaper stand? I am impressed you chose to live in such a beautiful place, thanks for your story. And I can’t wait to get back to Croatia, I miss it so much.

Ohh yes, those tax stamps and documents are hilarious. I was so shocked by those things before…now they are so normal. If you ever come this way, look me up πŸ™‚

I love Chasing the Donkey, she is a fantastic blogger and I’m so glad you featured her. I would have never guess she took her first flight at 20 and was scared to do so….it looks as though her husband changed her life!
