For Travel Blogger Thursday this week, we’re featuring Char Taylor of Taylor Hearts Travel, who is a self-proclaimed travel addict. She blogs regularly not only about the places she visits all over the world, but also about travel style, food, travel-inspired things for your home, and travel jobs. Let’s learn more about Char!
What inspires you to travel and what do you enjoy most about traveling?
My impatient desire to see the whole world inspires me to travel. Plus, the fact that travelling is so addictive and incredibly satisfying. I love that each city and town (let alone country) offers
something new and exciting; the people, the food, the landscapes. I hate labels and categories, so the fact that travelling is so surprising and varied really appeals to my personality.
Where is your favourite destination and why?
It would have to be San Francisco. I haven’t been there yet, but I just have an incredible longing to go there. Every picture I see or story that I read pulls me closer. I cannot wait to finally visit in December!
In terms of places I’ve been, I have so many favourites – Peru, Bali, Morocco…. the list is endless. The beautiful region of Puglia (southern Italy) recently blew my mind – I went with little knowledge of the area and came back brimming with recommendations. The Italian food is delicious, the sea is unbelievably clear, and English tourists haven’t swarmed Puglia yet so it feels really authentic.
I also really rate Colorado as a winter destination. The ski resort, Winter Park, is a snowy heaven. I tried snowmobiling for the first time in this place and loved it. As someone who isn’t the best skier, it meant that I could still whizz around at the top of a mountain. I’d go back to Colorado just for that experience again!
When did you start to travel, and where did you first visit?
I’ve always been abroad on family holidays, but my first proper travelling adventure started in 2007 when I went on an epic round the world trip. I started in New York, explored Mexico, Guatemala and Belize. I then moved down to South America, before hitting the east coast of Australia and a bit of Asia.
Why did you start your blog, and what do you enjoy most about blogging?
I started my blog, Taylor Hearts Travel, when I returned from Peru in 2013. After doing the Inca Trek I felt completely inspired. It was a bit of a spontaneous decision to blog. It doesn’t really cost much to set a blog up, so I figured I had little to lose by trying it out. I’m able to do it alongside my day job (which pays for my travels). I love that blogging gives me an excuse to talk about travel. I’m so passionate about it, so it’s a really enjoyable opportunity to relive my trips, inspire others and to share my recommendations. I also really like having something that is mine – I’m in control of all aspects from the design, the writing style and the general direction of Taylor Hearts Travel.
What do you like to bring back from the places you’ve visited?
My house is filled with stylish homewares from so many different countries. I love my Peruvian rug that lies on my living room floor. I also have quite a bit of contemporary artwork, one of my
favourites being from Ubud in Bali. My Mexican tapestry was also a good find and works well as a table runner. I have a section on my blog dedicated to travel treasures, which showcases good finds and also acts as a pointer to travel inspired shops. It’s not always possible to bring things home (due to money or luggage space), so it’s always handy to find good shops back home or ones that can deliver to you.
Where do you plan on visiting next?
My next trip will see me exploring Austria. I haven’t been for about ten years, so I’m interested to see if it’s as I remember. I’ll be enjoying cycling, spas and restaurants – a pretty good
combination in my opinion!
My next long haul destination will be San Francisco. I have so much excitement for this place.
As someone who follows a pescetarian diet with an interest in vegetarian cuisine, could you tell us your favorite cities or countries to find vegetarian food? What are some of your most memorable veggie meals?
Brussels (in Belgium) is really great for vegetarian food. First of all, the waffles are amazing. There are so many on offer, but you need to find the right van to get the best ones. Secondly, you have to visit Le Perroquet for the tastiest pitta you’ll ever eat. This post explains why and where to get the best food in Brussels.
Marrakech also gave me some of the most delicious food. Every meal I ate was a really good one, but in particular Le Comptoir Darna is worth checking out. You’ll also get a big dollop of
entertainment with your meal so it makes a good night out. I love enjoying different cuisines and influences, especially when I’m able to bring the recipe home. One of my favourites is the Balinese Banana Bread. It’s one of my favourite snacks as it reminds me of adventures in Ubud.
