We’re very honored to be nominated for our first award – the Liebster Blogging Award by Dave of Cook Sip Go! The word “liebster” has German origins and can be translated to a variety of English meanings, such as lovely, kind, pleasant and beloved. The origins of the Liebster Award are unknown, but it is a virtual award given to bloggers by other bloggers. In turn, the person who wins the award nominates other worthy bloggers, and so on.

Who Nominated Us?

Dave Cole of Cook Sip Go nominated us for this award (thank you!). He is a travel and food writer and photographer currently based in East Africa who loves exploring new cultures and local cuisine. Be sure to check out his blog as it’s one of our favorites!

Dave’s Questions to us:

1. What is the first travel you remember?

Lauren: I remember going to a cottage at Wasaga Beach for a week as a really young child, with really vague memories of being at the beach with my family. Our first longer trip as a family was when I was 7 years old and we went to Florida. We drove there (about a 22 hour drive!) but I loved the road trip with my family – the adventure of seeing new places, having the weather grow slowly warmer as we got closer to Florida…it was very exciting! Of course, going to Disney World was lots of fun as a child, but I really think that this trip started my interests in travel from a young age!

Justin: The first travel I remember was also to Florida, to these condos called the Sandcastles with my family. It was when I was really young, and definitely the first travel that I remember. We flew down to Florida and we went to Disney World. But what I liked most of all was building stuff in the sand – that was my fave!

2. Which destination is at the top of your travel bucket list?

We really want to go to Europe and Italy is at the top of our travel bucket list – so much that we’re saving to go there next year! We’d also really like to go to Hawaii, Iceland, Japan, Scotland, New Zealand, and so many other places!

3. Where did you experience your most memorable meal on the road and what was it?

Lauren: We really enjoyed eating meals at Aux Vivres restaurant in Montreal! We went there on three separate occasions in fact on our last trip to Montreal – for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! Everything on the menu was vegan, healthy, and delicious. It was Justin’s first taste of the Greek food that he used to love eating back when he ate meat and dairy, prepared completely vegan, and it was awesome! For me, I loved the Indian chapati wrap that I ate there with chickpeas and curry…yum! I hope we can go back there this summer.

4. Who is your favorite travel writer/blogger?

Wow…that is a really tough question! There are so many talented bloggers out there that I find it difficult to narrow it down to just one. For now, I’ll narrow it down to a few: Stephenie and Tony of 20 Years Hence, Audrey of That Back Packer,  Beth of Besudesu Abroad, Agata of Null & Full, Rika of Vegan Miam … I could keep going on and on as there are so many talented writers out there, and I have a huge list of travel blogs that I love reading that keeps growing!

5. Even though new destinations are fun, what is one place you could return to again and again?

We both agree that Montreal and New York City are places that we could go back to numerous times. We’ve both been to NYC in the past, although not together (yet!). I know that we really want to return to Bonaire in the Caribbean, as well as Dominica. I’m sure that as we visit more places that there will just be more places that we want to return to again and again!

6. What’s the most interesting wildlife experience you’ve had on your travels?

It was really fun seeing the Mona Monkey in Grenada up close! He was a wild monkey, but obviously was very used to the tourists as he took bananas from people’s hands and allowed us to pet him. I don’t think I’ve ever been up that close to a wild monkey before!

7. What’s one place you’ve traveled to and have no desire to return? Why?

Thankfully, we don’t really feel that way about any places yet! I’m sure we will encounter some places like that where we pretty much see everything that it has to offer, or the place just really isn’t for us..but we would gladly return to any of the places that we’ve been so far as there are still things to explore or re-visit.

8. What is your favorite restaurant in your hometown?

We love Lettuce Love Cafe and Kelly’s Bake Shoppe! They are both owned by Kelly Childs and Erinn Weatherbie, who are passionate for vegan cooking and baking. Lettuce Love Cafe has the best portobello sandwich, and we adore their vegan Mac N Cheez. Kelly’s Bake Shoppe makes this amazing dessert called the Mile High Brownie – I even ordered an entire cake version of this brownie from Kelly’s for Justin’s birthday (he said it was his favorite cake ever!). They bake all sorts of vegan and gluten-free desserts, although you’d never be able to tell them apart from the “real” versions – they’re decadent, rich, and tasty!

9. What is the most athletic feat you’ve accomplished while traveling?

We kayaked for two hours in Put-in-Bay, Ohio – around Gibraltar Island and around a lot of the shoreline of Put-in-Bay. By the end of the two hours, our arms were absolutely killing us! It was such great exercise, and we got to see the island from an entirely new perspective this way. Also, Gibraltar Island was so interesting and there’s really no other way to get out to the island other than kayaking!

10. Have you ever attempted to cook at home a dish you first tried while traveling? If so, what was the result?

We cooked a vegan version of a Pesto pasta dish that we enjoyed aboard our recent cruise o the Emerald Princess! We attended a cooking demonstration by the head chef on board and he gave us the recipe. It turned out wonderfully and brought back such awesome memories of the delicious food we enjoyed on our vacation!

Thanks so much for the nomination 🙂 Much appreciated!!!

  3. Thank you for the nomination! I’ll try to gather a post. I loved learning more about you two. I wonder if we saw the same Mona monkey in Grenada 🙂 We have that Pesto recipe from Princess too and it’s so good. Here’s wishing you make it to Italy soon.

  4. Thank you so much for the nomination. I am very impressed by the 2 hours of kayaking. I would say that sharing a kayak has been one of the biggest tests of our marriage. We were doing it in the dark to get to a bioluminescent bay in Puerto Rico, and I kept steering my tall hubby’s head into low hanging branches of overhanging trees. 2 hours, and we might have been divorced by now. Both of your hometown restaurants sound delicious. The only place in my town to get a portobello sandwich has sadly closed down. I don’t think there’s a vegan bakery within hours of me.
