Who else loves going on road trips? The Northeastern United States is a great getaway for road trip lovers if you’re departing from Canada or this region of the USA. There are lots of exciting cities to explore, including those in New York, New Jersey, and Rhode Island. Grab a map, roughly plot your journey, and set out on the open road!
Rochester, New York
I’ve driven to Rochester on a few occasions as it’s only about two hours away. My favorite stop is the Strong Museum of Play, fun for people of all ages. There are interactive exhibits, including a video game museum. I had so much fun playing the retro arcade machines there. Another attraction that you should check out is the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film, the world’s oldest photography museum. There are dozens of budget hotels in Rochester, including the Motel 6 Rochester Airport, conveniently located near the University of Rochester.
Jersey City, New Jersey
Jersey City is at the doorstep of New York City, and there are lots of budget-friendly hotels to make your New York City trip affordable. The best place to stay if you’re looking to travel to New York is along the waterfront. You’ll be able to easily get to the Statue of Liberty, Liberty State Park, or the 9/11 Memorial from your hotel. Be sure to reserve your hotel early as these popular places on the waterfront tend to fill up fast.
Newport, Rhode Island
The best time of year to visit Newport is during the summer months when it’s warm outside. To see some of the most beautiful views in New England, you must take a walk on the Famous Cliff Walk. It’s a free, public path with stunning scenes of the Atlantic Ocean. On the Cliff Walk, watch out for the Forty Steps, a spectacular staircase that leads down to the water below. There are also dozens of mansions in town where you can check out the amazing architecture, some of which are museums open to the public.
East Elmhurst, New York
East Elmhurst is also near New York City, about a half hour’s drive. There are cheap hotels here for much less than the price of a New York City hotel. East Elmhurst has attractions of its own, including several free art galleries that are worth checking out. There are also many free outdoor events during the summer months.
Newark, New Jersey
Newark is another great choice when it comes to planning your New York City vacation. There are many cheap hotels in Newark that are a great alternative to a hotel in New York City. Newark is home to the New Jersey Devils, so it’s a great place to catch an NHL game. Be sure to check out the cherry blossoms at the Cherry Blossom Festival in the spring. Newark also has several museums, art galleries, and outdoor festivals in the summer. It is close to New York City, but it’s surely a destination in itself.
